20. A Plague Tale: Requiem (PS5)
Better than its predecessor in virtually every way, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a proper sequel that improves its familiar gameplay mechanics and couples them with stunning PS5 visuals and an engaging story. It doesn't completely rewrite the script, but taking a page from the Naughty Dog playbook, this is a cinematic adventure more than worth your time.
19. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5)
One of the best Star Wars games in recent memory is Jedi: Fallen Order, and it's even better with its PS5 iteration. The action title charts the adventures of Cal Kestis, a character who undergoes secret Jedi training amid the Empire's crackdown. With a motley crew, you journey to various known and new worlds, engaging in simple environmental puzzles and intense melee combat. On PS5, the game benefits from improved framerate and higher resolution, giving you the best picture possible while cutting through Stormtroopers with your customised lightsaber.
18. Control: Ultimate Edition (PS5)
Control pushed the limits of the PS4, delivering an intense third-person romp — but a technically flawed one. This return trip to the unorthodox Old House feels much more at home on the PS5, however, and while there are some strange difficulty spikes, Remedy’s unique brand of shooting shines throughout much of this engrossing outing. The oppressive setting, unnerving enemies, and wonderfully eerie atmosphere really come to life on Sony's current-gen machine, offering much improved visuals and performance.
17. The Last of Us: Part I (PS5)
Forever tainted by its high launch price, The Last of Us: Part I is a faithful remake of Naughty Dog's 2013 masterpiece that brings the post-apocalyptic adventure up to modern standards. While the gameplay is largely untouched, its visuals shine with stunning character models, gorgeous backdrops, and an abundance of detail to ensure there's something to look at in every corner. Some will forever question why it was needed, but The Last of Us: Part I has never looked better.
16. Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn (PS5)
Looking at it now, it's genuinely hard to believe that Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn started life as a terribly misguided and badly designed MMO that came close to sinking one of Square Enix's internal development teams. Its rebirth has been one of modern gaming's most extraordinary success stories, and the game is now widely considered to be one of the greatest MMORPGs ever made. Bolstered by multiple extremely well received expansions, A Realm Reborn has gone from strength to strength, and it continues to attract millions of players. Many would even argue that it's the best Final Fantasy game of the last decade — MMO or not.
15. Death's Door (PS5)
Death's Door isn't doing anything particularly original, but everything presented here is just so well crafted. The game is an isometric action adventure, starring you as a reaper crow who must venture out and calm the lost souls that haunt the land. The world created here is a fascinating one, designed in an almost Dark Souls-like way; it intertwines with itself and pockmarks each area with baddies to fend off. The combat is straightforward but satisfying, and the presentation is really strong throughout. It might not break the mould, but this unassuming game puts its best talon forward.
14. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (PS5)
A superhero game from Square Enix is enough for hardcore PlayStation players to proceed with caution after Marvel's Avengers, but developer Eidos Montreal has done Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy proud with a faithful, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable campaign based on original storytelling. It's a meaty one too, lasting north of 20 hours. The characters of Drax, Groot, Rocket, and Gamora are just as you remember them from the Marvel movies, and even Star-Lord performs valiantly despite the lack of a Chris Pratt face scan. Combat is deep and engaging, exploration is limited but fun, and dialogue is top-notch.
13. Hitman 3 (PS5)
The culmination of a generation of effort from the highly talented Danish developer IO Interactive, Hitman 3 is not only a sensational stealth game on its own – but it also compiles all of the locations from the World of Assassin trilogy, bringing them under one umbrella for near limitless espionage. The series blends large, intricately designed sandbox stages with clockwork-like gameplay, which is open to manipulation in any way you see fit. Your objective in each mission is to murder your marks without being spotted – and how you go about it is entirely up to you. A truly unique and flawlessly designed experience.
12. Death Stranding Director's Cut (PS5)
Death Stranding Director's Cut takes the truly unique "strand game" adventure and dials things up a notch for PS5. Hideo Kojima and his team created a haunting and strange world with the original game, tasking players with traversing a desolate and dangerous landscape to make deliveries. It shouldn't work, but it does — every step you take can be a risk, and this need to watch your footing is an interesting way to create tension, especially when those nasty BTs show up. Director's Cut enhances the experience with improved graphics and performance, DualSense support, 3D audio, and a range of new content.
11. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (PS5)
Disco Elysium stands as a truly great achievement in role-playing. Attempting to crack a dangerously suspicious murder case as an amnesiac cop, you're tasked with interrogating the locals while trying to work out just who the hell you're supposed to be. Engrossing from start to finish, Disco Elysium is built on a foundation of fantastic writing and brilliant characters, as you carve your own unique path through the atmospheric city of Revachol. Its methodical pace won't be for everyone, but if you're looking for a deep and brain-bending RPG, you won't find anything better on PS5.

Ghost of Tsushima vs Elden Ring...not an easy choice. I'd probably choose Elden Ring but Ghost is right up there too. Both are excellent games.

Ghost is top of another list, it's just the best game.
I’m surprised Spiderman made it to the top 3. While the gameplay was amazing when it came out for the PS4, the remaster doesn’t do enough to warrant it a top 3 spot on a PS5 list IMO.
Ghost of Tsushima and Elden Ring deserve their thrones. Horizon Forbidden West should have been in the top 3 with them.

While waiting for that, Horizon is my number 1 for sure, though I am yet to play Elden Ring.
Many of those are considered primarily Action-Adventure games, I don't see why are they even mentioned.

None of those are adventure games. Action-adventure maybe even though they are mostly action.
Clue: barely any of those games have any puzzles at all and if they do - like Uncharted - they are few and far between. In actual adventure games it is all about puzzles.
Maybe not rewrite genre definitions?

It's not as much about whether I agree or not, I just don't think genres are something everybody can just go and redefine however they will. Or of course they can but I don't really see the point in that. Using genres or whatever terms means for others to understand what is being said and to be able to put things in context.
If these are adventure games, what are the "other" adventure games? Games like Thimbleweed Park being a modern example?
Why name the adventure games and make a list based on such a genre definition instead of calling them "action-adventures" or just "action" as they mostly are? What makes these games more adventure than action? Because they are adventurous?
According to this article, the downside to Elden Ring is too many load screens. I thought PS5 is supposed to eliminate loading screens for the most part? Isn’t that the selling point? I have not bought Elden Ring yet but it is on my list to buy at some point.
@Nico_D I'd argue you're doing exactly what you're accusing us of. Of course adventure games include those traditional point-and-click titles (you'll notice we've included Disco Elysium), but for many people a franchise like Tomb Raider is also a type of adventure game.

Newer games get more recognition. Ghosts of Tsushima was a good game but game for game not as good as Uncharted 4. Not that it means everything but GOT was an 83% on metacritic.

You wouldn't call a 4 by 4 with a plough tractor? Because it's not. It may have parts and functions which are the same as tractor but it's not a tractor.
@Nico_D #1 keep in mind this list was based on people’s votes not the writer’s opinion. My perspective is they used the base word “Adventure” which leaves it wide open to all/ANY adventure type games whether it’s text-adventure, puzzle-adventure, action-adventure etc.
If they said best “video games” ANY game right, best “puzzle game” well that could be Tetris or Uncharted - ANY game with puzzles, best shooter could be Call of Duty OR atari 2600 space invaders (it technically involves “shooting”. Anyway ✌️
So what category would Ratchet and clank RA be in? To me, thats an adventure game with alot of action in it and its defenately one of the best on the ps5. Cant believe its not on the list let alone top 5.
Tsushima definitely belongs up there! Elden Ring on 7 is fair. The game is great, but the overall worship? Matter of taste I guess.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Just think what makes it tough to categorize games - so many have combined genres. I agree Ratchet could be called an adventure game, technically it’s an Action-Platformer / 3rd person shooter.

I mean literally all of those points apply to Elden Ring as well so yeah its still a tough choice. I'd probably still give the edge to Elden Ring due to the higher build diversity options but Ghost is cool too.

I realise the term "adventure game" has been expanded over the years but the roots of the genre are in the old point and click games with emphasis on a puzzle solving alongside an immersive story.
