Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has opened up about a character in The Last of Us that we have quite a few questions regarding, namely, Ellie's mother, Anna. Apparently, we almost got an entire DLC focused around Anna, but according to Druckmann, plans for its inclusion just kind of "fell apart."
Now it looks like this missing narrative thread will be something that is addressed. For those sensitive to spoilers (specifically, for the HBO series) of even the vaguest kind concerning casting, read on at your own peril!
In an interview with Variety, Druckmann (along with his co-writer on the HBO adaptation, Craig Mazin) fielded questions following the release of Episode 2 regarding how the show differs from the game.
When asked what element of the show missing from the game he was most excited about including, Druckmann recalls that "the one that shows up very late in the season is Ellie’s mom. I had written a short story after we had shipped the game already. It was supposed to be an animated short, but it fell apart and didn’t come to be. There was a moment where we almost made it as DLC, but it fell apart."
The cool twist here, as Druckmann tells it, is the poetry involved and the feeling of coming full circle. Anna will be played by none other than Ashley Johnson, the actor originally responsible for portraying Ellie in the games.
It will be fascinating to see how it all comes together; we would have to imagine the story will be told in some kind of flashback sequence. Are you excited to learn more about Ellie's origins? Sound off in the comments section below.

That should have been TLoU 2.
Mind you, there are a million things that should have been TLoU 2 instead of what was.
This guy started his character with 10 luck.
Not cannon lol
I have a feeling that’ll be yet another episode that leaves me sobbing on the couch. Can’t wait to see Ashley onscreen though.
@Mad001 "Not a large-caliber gun classified as a type of artillery lol" 🤔
@Toypop such a good game though.
Very excited to see Ashley Johnson in the show. I think it'll be a blast (and a bit strange), to see her playing Anna. But nevertheless, loving the show, love the games, and I can't wait for what's to come from this franchise.
Go Naughty Dog!
@Matroska lol now I'm thinking of having one of those in the game lol
@Toypop It definitely didn't go in the direction I thought it would but I'm glad they went so left-field. Incredible game!
This DLC sounds like it would have been a perfect addition to part II though.
I see we still haven't finished crapping on TLoU2 yet.
Do people actually think Druckmann is reading this and that they have just caught him in some fake fox news "gotcha" moment? So strange
I am excited to finally hear her story. There were those little bits of info in the first part of TLOU but not much.
Also, curious to see where the show goes, there is a lot of time between the first and second game. I have finally gotten around to finishing PtII after being completely put off by the beginning. It isn't nearly as bad as a lot of people made it seem but it definitely should have been two different games, or played at the same time. I did end up liking Abby more than I thought I would but am still disappointed with how the story turned out.
@Boucho11 Agreed, has to be one of my favourite games of all time
@PhantomMenace84 for me vice versa - I was team Abby and I liked the idea of switching perspectives very much - it showed us that the protagonist we fall in love with is not necessarilly the good one as we are not shown the full picture. Therefore, we play Part I as Joel and Ellie as they have the more unique story (I assume) than Abby, but once Abby enters the story, the game shows us that Ellie is not a pure protagonist.
Just genious!
@DiabloSSJ yeah without posting spoilers, she is the one who actually had a full story arc. Because of the weird ending I felt like Ellie really just got shafted by the writing. So many things could have made the ending infinitly better in my opinion.
